The exam
You have two exams to revise for: Paper 1 (a knowledge paper on Medicine and Nazi Germany) and Paper 2 (a source paper on a topic from Medicine that you will have been told in advance).
Paper 1 is the first paper you will sit (obviously) and will test your knowledge on Medicine Through Time and Nazi Germany. You will have 4 ½ hour questions to complete, all divided into sub questions.
1. Read the front page carefully. Candidates lose marks answering the wrong question.
2. Read through all parts of the optional questions carefully. Don’t start answering the first question straight away; you might not be able to answer the other two.
3. Do not let parts a, b and c run together. The examiner has to mark each question separately. Do not write “as I said in part a” as the examiner cannot give you credit for this. You can repeat information if you think you need to.
4. For higher mark questions, write more and spend more time on them.
5. When the question says use the source and your own knowledge – USE BOTH. You can lose half marks if you do not.
6. Part A questions are worth 5 marks, you can easily get 5 marks by writing down 5 facts.
7. In a ‘How far’ question discuss both points of view and then reach a conclusion. The same for questions based on individuals or time periods in medicine.
8. In ‘explain’ questions, make sure you explain two factors
9. Why did X happen? Don’t just list a number of reasons; make sure you explain them as well using plenty of facts.
Paper 1 Markschemes for a), b) and c) questions:
a) Describe…. (5)
One mark for each point
Two marks for each point explained
b) Explain… (7)
1-2 marks – general ideas
2-4 marks – identifies specific reasons or describes what happened
3-5 marks – explains one specific reason
6 marks – explains one reason and mentions another
7 marks – explains two reasons
c) Two sided/'how far' essay questions (8)
1-2 marks – general ideas
3 marks – identifies reasons for one side
4 marks – identifies reasons for both sides
5-6 marks – explains factors for one side
7 marks – explains factors for both sides
8 marks – explains both sides with a conclusion
Know the rules and play wise!
