Guide to paper one questions
For paper one questions, you have source questions and essay questions. Essay questions will be split into themes. You will always be asked to 'describe' for 5 marks, 'explain' for 7 marks and a two sided/'how far do you agree' essay question for 8 marks.
'Describe' questions should be answered quickly and carefully. You should have five clear points or three clear points described in detail. You should be writing less than a page.
'Explain' questions should have two clear points explained. You need to make sure you stick closely to the question. Try not to tell the story or make a list of all the possible answers, you can't get full marks for that.
Two sided/'how far do you agree' essay questions should take the most time. You will have an essay question to answer using your own knowledge. On medicine, you will have a quote, make sure you use the quote in your answer. On Germany, you will have two things to compare. You need to agree and disagree with the statement in two separate paragraphs. In each paragraph, try to explain two points. At the end, write a conclusion explaining how far you agree or disagree with the question. Make sure you use a piece of your own knowledge from your essay in the conclusion.
Paper 2 source questions have been added onto here as both separate questions and as the whole paper. If you are struggling with a source question, there is a link at the bottom to the whole paper and you are welcome to use infromation from the paper as long as you make it clear which other source you are using so I can look it up. There is no general markscheme for this paper so the individual questions have markschemes on the bottom.
Paper 2 topics:
2005 Medicine in the Middle Ages
2006 John Snow and the causes of cholera
2007 The work of Alexander Fleming
2008 How important was William Harvey?
2009 Surviving Surgery
2010 How far were attempts to prevent the spread of the Black Death a waste of time?
2011 How successful was Mary Seacole?
2012 How much credit does Fleming deserve for penicillin?
Keywords
The exam board use keywords that you need to make sure you understand:
MESSAGE - what the person who produced the source is trying to tell you
PURPOSE - what the person who produced the source is trying to get you to do
UTILITY - usefulness, is the source useful? (Note - all sources are useful in some way, even if they are putting forward someone's point of view or you think they're lying)
RELIABILITY - do you trust the source?
CONTEXTUAL KNOWLEDGE - information from the time period used to explain what's going on in the source
